Hot Stove Report: Padres Considering Moving Greene

If what MLB.com writer Mike Scarr indicates is true, the Padres are apparently looking to overhaul their franchise in the offseason.

Padres GM Kevin Towers has acknowledged that moving shortstop Khalil Greene is definitely an offseason possibility; with the Tigers, Orioles, and Reds as possible landing spots for the right hand hitting shortstop.

Towers has said in previous interviews that if starter Jake Peavy is traded to the Braves, the Padres would be asking for shortstop Yunel Escobar as one of the players in return. Adding Escobar would likely indicate that Greene has spent his last season with the Padres.

Dodgers Looking to Acquire Maddux

According to ESPN.com news services, the Los Angeles Dodgers are set to acquire Greg Maddux from the San Diego Padres:

The team had agreed to the terms of a deal with the Padres for veteran right-hander Greg Maddux, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday night because no announcement had been made.

It's unclear what the Padres will receive in return for the 42-year-old Maddux. MLB.com reported on Monday night that the Padres would receive two players to be named later. The trade, which was first reported by the Los Angeles Times, was expected to be announced Tuesday.

According to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark, no deal had been reached Monday night, but conversations are ongoing. Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch and general manager Ned Colletti would not confirm the deal to the Times either.

On paper, this rotation looks dominant; Peavy, Maddux, Prior, Young, and Wolf. But everyone knows that these games aren't played on paper. Maddux is another year older, Prior is one bad pitch from landing on the DL again, Wolf is a ticking time bomb, and Peavy has to be wondering how many times another unbelievable pitching season will find him watching the playoffs from his couch.
The lineup is littered with young guns, but acquiring an aging Jim Edmonds
is a questionable move. Its hard to believe that the Padres don't have anyone in their system that could play centerfield.
Kevin Kouzmanoff and Chase Headly provide a little hope for the Padres, who are looking to add some offense to a lineup lacking punch. Who knows though, maybe the lineup would be amazing if they didn't play half their games in Petco Park.
